Jacobs Honors Old-Bethpage 'Trailblazer'

A resident is recognized for her outstanding achievements.

An Old-Bethpage resident has been recognized as Nassau County “Trailblazer.”

Marlene Mendelsohn was honored by Leg. Judy Jacobs at the Nassau County Legislature’s Women: Trailblazers of the New Millennium awards ceremony in Mineola on Monday.

An active community member, Mendelsohn, along with other residents, created RAGE (Residents Against Garbage Expansion). The group managed to stop the Town of Oyster Bay from building a resource recovery plant and incinerator on top of what was considered the most hazardous toxic waste site in New York State, according to Jacobs.

The efforts of RAGE also prevented a Plainview landfill from ever opening, which is now the site of the Plainview Hamlet, Jacobs said.
