Menorah Candle Ignites Woodbury Home Fire

The candle fell onto a tablecloth, causing flames to spread to a chair, police say.

WOODBURY, NY — A Woodbury home fire was ignited by a fallen Menorah candle on Wednesday night, Nassau police said.

The candle fell onto a tablecloth, causing it to burn around 8:10 p.m., police said. The fire then spread to a chair.

An officer entered the home with a fire extinguisher and doused the flames. No one was injured, police said.

"Nassau County residents are reminded when burning any candles inside their homes to use safe practices including placing candles on heat resistant surfaces, only burn in well ventilated areas away from drafts and vents, don’t move a burning candle and never leave a burning candle unattended," the department wrote.
