Mother Drove Drunk, Crashed With Toddler In Car: Nassau Police

Police say both the woman and her 18-month-old son suffered minor injuries in the crash.

SYOSSET, NY — A Suffolk County woman crashed her car while driving drunk Tuesday night, injuring herself and her 18-month-old son, Nassau County police said.

According to police, Dshawna Courtney, 30, of Amityville, was driving a 2019 Kia north on Route 135 when she struck a tree near exit 14W in Syosset at 10:25 p.m.

Officers responded to the scene, and arrested Courtney without incident. Police say she had her 18-month-old son in the car.

The crash caused an abrasion on the toddler's neck, police said, and a cut on Courtney's head. They were both taken to a hospital for treatment and evaluation.

Courtney is charged with driving while intoxicated, aggravated DWI (Leandra's Law) and endangering the welfare of a child. She is scheduled to be arraigned later today in First District Court in Hempstead.
