Biz Briefs: New Nu Toy, Regeneron, Grocery
Regeneron will be creating 400 new jobs in the region, Nu Toys is moving up Main, and there's a great new grocer in Sleepy Hollow's inner village.
Up and up is the theme this week: Regeneron expansion to come, Nu Toy's upgrading to bigger digs, and a shiny new grocery store for Sleepy Hollow seem to point to better economic times before us.
Here's the latest:
Tarrytown's beloved Nu Toy Store will be new again when it upgrades to bigger digs soon. Owner Angel Rafter has announced she is leaving her 750 square foot space and moving into the sadly suddenly-closed bicycle shop at 16 Main Street.
That leaves her space in need of a renter, which she is looking to help her landlord secure.

Rafter writes: "We are moving! So our space on main street will be open. Anyone looking to move to main street, expand, start a business, this is a great location. 750 sq ft, great land lords, only requirement, NO food! Message me if you are interested!"

In YES food news, Sleepy Hollow now boasts a new full-size grocery store. La Esquiva Latina is bright, clean and well-stocked (with good prices too). It's bigger than a Beekman store but smaller than C-Town, which for many who walk home with fresh produce...is just right. Tour this welcome addition to the inner village here.

Regeneron has announced big expansion plans in Tarrytown, and the creation of 400 jobs to the region coming soon. Governor Andrew Cuomo was first in line to herald the big news:
“This announcement further advances New York’s reputation as a leader in the biotech industry,” Governor Cuomo said. “This administration has had a laser-like focus on creating an environment where companies, such as Regeneron, can grow and invest. The expansion of Regeneron’s headquarters and the addition of hundreds of new high-skill jobs is great news for Westchester County and great news for New York.”
They will add two new buildings to their Tarrytown campus, (300,000 square feet of laboratory and office space). The anticipated construction timeline is late 2013 through late 2015.
In recent economic slump years, Regeneron has only been on an upwards growth cycle. Between here and their Rensselaer site (which will also see expansion), they’ve gone from from a total of 682 employees in 2007 to 2,000 today. Over 1,300 of these employees work in Tarrytown.
The company had apparently considered expanding outside of New York, but the combination of $8.5M in state tax credits and incentives from Mt. Pleasant’s Industrial Development Agency cemented their commitment to grow here instead.
“I applaud Governor Cuomo for his ongoing efforts to make New York once again open for business, and commend Regeneron and Dr. Schleifer for their continued investment in our state," Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins said. "This expansion will not only grow the local economy, but will also encourage additional high-tech businesses to look to New York as a leader in emerging industries. My colleagues in the Senate Democratic Conference and I look forward to continuing our work with Governor Cuomo to attract new businesses and grow existing business in New York and ensure this state has the solid economic foundation to succeed in the new economy.”
And from Mount Pleasant Town Supervisor Joan Maybury: “Regeneron’s decision to expand its headquarters here is great news for our local economy as it will not only create hundreds of jobs, but continue to help attract investment in the innovative companies and industries that we need to succeed in a global economy. The Mount Pleasant IDA is excited to be supporting this project and commends Governor Cuomo for his efforts to make, and keep, New York open for business. We congratulate Dr. Schleifer and the Regeneron family on this latest endeavor and for their continued commitment to our communities.”
