Croton Teacher, Mother to Open Kumon Learning Center in Tarrytown

After being an educator in various school districts from Brooklyn to Westchester for over 12 years, Lillian Brijeski is starting up a branch of the Kumon Learning Center in Tarrytown.

This Croton-on-Hudson resident is also a mother – and she became a believer in the system as her own kids have spent three years with the program there.

Kumon Centers exist all over the world and have sprung up in Westchester (there’s one in Croton, one in Ossining.)

Brijeski hopes to open this one on Tarrytown’s North Broadway as soon as June, permits permitting. The windows are brown-papered right now as the space is still under construction (and the sprinkler system gets installed).

Meantime, Brijeski is itching for the opportunity to start her own business and “marry my skills with doing something good for the community.”

She specifically choose Tarrytown for its demographic and a need she sees. Kumon is a supplemental program to student education providing afterschool math and reading curriculum from pre-K aged kids all the way through grade 12.

It can either fill gaps for remedial students or provide enrichment for kids who need more, she said. Students come twice a week for quick 20-30 minute instructional sessions where they discuss their homework, get feedback, get books from the lending library and more.

Each kid gets a program tailored to their needs, and Brijeski who will be the sole instructor there until enough enrollment merits hiring more staff, plans to work closely with parents and the schools. What will set her center apart, she says, is her commitment to communication.

“One thing I want to bring is real communication between the center, families, students and schools," Brijeski said. "The kids are gaining an extra teacher. I am giving parents the green light to please do bother me.”

Kumon of Tarrytown will offer free registration to all families that enroll during the month of June. Kumon of Tarrytown’s hours are: Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. For more information, or to schedule an orientation with a free placement test, please call (914) 829-5288, email LillianBrijeski@ikumon.com, or visit www.kumonoftarrytown.com.
