Meet Village Dog's Most Popular Dog

The behind the scenes creation of the Hassan dog by Village Dog co-owner Carl Van Dekker.

"Hassan is the most interesting of the popular," says sausage afficiando Carl Van Dekker, one half of the brother duo behind Village Dog.

Just over six months in business, things are going great for Village Dog (winner of crowd-sourced t-shirt tagline: "man's best friend") with weekend business the busiest and several dogs getting most the play.

Among the most ordered, there's the "classic" (sauerkraut and mustard), the "county fair" (chili and cheese), and the more exotic breed, the "Hassan." Its namesake is the very Hassan Jarane who operated Mint out of this space for eight years before he passed the lease along to the Van Dekkers and moved onto bigger digs across the street.

The Hassan is all "very Mediterrean," said Van Dekker, as he composed in this video the lamb merguez dog topped with fresh tzitziki and a roasty/sweet "harissa" pepper puree all on a Balthazar bun.

Village Dog has expanded its realm as in-house caterer for Elmsford microbrewery Captain Lawrence, where you can order from their full menu Wednesday through Sunday. In-house they're frying up homemade doughnuts to inspire a new weekend "brunch" following.
