MSM DesignZ Success Story in Age of Recession

Business growth isn’t something you hear a whole lot of these days, so it’s heartening to learn that Tarrytown’s own Regeneron has reported stock earnings have quintupled in the last two years.

But you don’t have to be in pharmaceuticals to enjoy a boom. Witness the expansion and ongoing success story of Tarrytown’s MSM DesignZ, Inc.

Owner Mario Mirabella used to focus on web design when he started in the tech-rich ‘90s, but now he’s added social media expertise to his company’s resume. He’s nothing if not flexible, as his industry demands. When he started designing as a freelancer, it was all flyers and mailers. Now it’s instant networking, mobile apps, Pinterest, Instagram. The only thing constant is change itself.

“Tech is moving so much faster,” Mirabella said. “You have more to cover and have to have your hands in so many pots and offer so many services.”

First his company expanded from their White Plains office (opened in 2005) into a second branch in Tarrytown in 2011. Now after looking all over the county for a bigger office, they ended up moving right across the street on Route 119 to double the floor plan. Since April, he’s already hired a few new designers to fill the bigger space.

Mirabella knows the importance of posting these days, having “content,” all in the interest of offering up something (notably: free) to the consumer which points them back to the company. “Back in 2010 marked the whole emergence of how important content is,” Mirabella said. He said their blog site gets over three times more traffic than their business one. And he said, they post “as much as we can” on Patch – often several times a week.

Mirabella is among our finest and most regular bloggers on Patch, a role he shares with his company’s Kelsey Belgrave.

MSM can get you set up with a website or it can handle the social media aspect of your business or anything in between.

As far as business growth in an age of recession, he says they’ve seen a “turnaround” since 2011. Mirabella’s in his 14th year of running the company – through the flushness of 2005-2007 and then feeling the affects of economic downturn in 2009-2010. 2010, in a word, “horrible,” he said. “It was a really bad year.”

However in 2011, they “took a roll of the dice” and opened up a second office in Tarrytown and brought in “non-designers” – social media/blogging/SEO types.

“We started seeing more action and people were paying more attention to us,” Mirabella said. “You can’t stay stagnant for business to come in.”

The whole goal in a culture of so many web design businesses in the county, is to “try to separate ourselves," Mirabella said. "It’s very apparent from our website that few out there have the type of impressions we have in our area.”

"We were fortunate to be honored this year with awards for our work; it's nice to be recognized and for our clients to know they made the right decision when hiring us," said Mirabella. ”We take a lot of pride in what we do."
