Music Hall Icicles Pose Main Street Risk

With winter weather comes a seasonal problem for the Tarrytown Music Hall and a threatening, if beautiful, scene for those walking near this historic landmark.

Twice recently, Music Hall icicles have made their appearance in the Tarrytown Police blotters.

On Feb. 10 at 12:28 p.m., a caller reported to police his concern over icicles overhanging the sidewalk from the roof of the Music Hall. He requested the fire department remove them. The fire department reported they could not perform this task due to insurance restrictions, but that the Music Hall would have to hire a contractor to remove them and block off the area of concern.

On Feb. 11 at 2:22 p.m., a caller reported that large icicles were falling off the roof of the Music Hall. Police contacted the village building department.

By now, the temperature has since gone through several upturns and downs and the icicles, reports executive director Bjorn Olsson, are long gone. The problem however, he said, is ongoing.

“It has been a long standing problem in winter, but we are planning some major restorations this year, including a new roof, complete with ice breakers and new gutters, which we hope will mitigate this problem,” Olsson said.
