Police: Evacuations Following Gas Line Break

Three houses were cleared for over an hour on Croton Avenue yesterday when a contractor broke a gas line in a home.

A gas line break in one home resulted in the temporary evacaution of three households but no injuries, Tarrytown Police report.

Police received a call reporting a gas leak at 23 Croton Avenue around 10 a.m. Wednesday. The contractor had apparently cracked the gas line while installing a hot water heater, Lt. William Herguth said.

Tarrytown Fire Department and Tarrytown Volunteer Ambulance Corps were dispatched and Con Edison was notified. Police closed the roadway in the area and firefighters evacuated adjacent homes "as a precautionary measure," Herguth said.

The area was shut down for about an hour and a half, Herguth said. Con Edison turned the gas off to the house affected and everyone was allowed back in.

No one required treated for gas exposure, Herguth said.
