Police: Powdered Baby Formula Theft

An employee at Tarrytown's new CVS reported to Tarrytown Police on Feb. 8 at 4:20 p.m., that a man just left the store with baby formula without paying.

The suspect was a white man about 6 feet tall, mid to late 30s. He allegedly left the store without paying for two cans of powdered baby formula, valued at $51.98. He left in a black Jeep with NJ plates. Police filed a petit larceny case.

CVS was recently the scene of alleged theft by three women arrested with a large quantity of toiletries in their possession.

Before this an alleged theft from CVS of large amounts of bodywash had two men arrested.

Baby formula, in particular, has long been a hot item on the black market, popular with thieves for its high resale value. According to a report on ABC News, infant formula is so commonly stolen it's known as "liquid gold" and often kept in locked cases in stores. 

The ABC article states:

Drug dealers sometimes use the powdered formula to dilute heroin and methamphetamine or to stretch the product when supplies run low.

However, experts say that more often than not, formula is stolen because of its high market demand among consumers rather than drug dealers.
