Posca: 64 Years in the Auto Repair Business

Central Avenue is the car repair hub of Tarrytown, with no less than four shops for cars (and even one for motorcycles) along its short curved slope.

In the midst of this is Posca Service Center, serving residents’ auto repair needs for decades.

Steve Posca, for the last 10 years, has been running the place that he “pretty much grew up in.” His grandfather started the business in 1949, which he passed along to his son, and his son to his son...

Despite spending his life in this business, Posca says the trade is always changing and keeping him on his toes. With “everything computer controlled” now, he said the work is “both harder and more interesting.” He takes courses at private training centers to keep up on the many technological advances in the industry.

His shop on this bright spring day is bustling – “one guy is out today, the other is out to lunch,” Posca said as he fields my questions in between answering the phone and tending to a few customers that show up in the shop.

They do lots of commercial work here, Posca said, but also everything your car needs except for body work and paint (you can go across the street for that).

With so many neighbors plying the same trade, Posca said he’s friendly with all of them. “There’s competition, sure, but not cut-throat.”

This time of year, people are doing their spring cleaning, literally washing the salt off, but it’s also a good time to plan for what’s to come soon. "Make sure you’re good on the antifreeze," Posca advised. "Make sure your air conditioning works before it gets really hot."
