Sports Digest: Hackley's Davis Ranks High

Welcome to Patch's snapshot of sports in Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow.

A round up of college students who hail from Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow, from Dick Miller:

In his debut as a catcher for the Muhlenberg Mules' baseball team, freshman Conor McDermott of the Hackley School walked once, struck out once, and made five put outs in his nine's 6-4 loss to Geneva College at Ft. Pierce , Florida on Mar. 5th. On Mar. 8th, facing Marywood College, he singled, walked once, made 9 putouts, and had one assist in a 5-2 loss. The Mules closed out their Florida sojourn with a 7-6 win on Mar. 9th over Penn State-Behrens, 7-6. Trailing 6-2 going into the last half of the ninth frame, they rallied with five runs to take the contest.

John Bogusz of Sleepy Hollow and Wooster University, in a seesaw lacrosse game at home on Mar. 6th with Washington and Jefferson College, won by the guests in three overtimes, 9-8, had two ground balls and one caused turnover in the game.

Jamie Bucci, of Sleepy Hollow, a freshman outfielder for the Cortlandt State Red Dragons made her debut on the morning of Mar. 8th with Christopher Newport University in Columbus Ga., and pinched hit in the 4-2 loss. In a second game, a 10-3 loss DePauw University, she likewise pinched hit. Playing Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on the morning of Mar. 9th, in the 8-7 eight inning setback, Bucci also pinched hit. On Mar. 10th, in the first of two games, they won over DePauw, 7-4. In game number two with Washington U. of Missouri, they dropped a 6-1 contest, as she also pinched hit in this one. The Bears' hurler allowed only one hit for the Red Dragons.

On Mar. 13th, in a double bill with William Peace College, Cortland State softball crushed their hosts twice, 16-7 and 16-6, with Bucci pinch hitting in the night cap. In a game at Salisbury on Mar. 15th, she had her first hit of the young season, a pinch hit single up the middle in the top of the fifth inning, and then took over right field for the balance of the 8-2 setback. She was one for two at the plate and made two putouts in the outfield. Playing Capitol in the same location, she pinched hit in a 5-4 loss to the their opponents, and then briefly took over the catching chores in the game.

In tennis action with Florida Tech at Melbourne on Mar.11th, The Lehigh Mountain Hawks' women's tennis team lost the day, 8-1. Ali Kaminetsky of Hackley and her doubles partner won the only match against the 11-3 Panthers, 8-4. She dropped her singles match, 6-4-62. Facing Bethune-Cookman at Daytona Beach on Mar. 13th, she and her doubles partner lost their match, 8-0, while the team was at the short end of an 8-1 score.

In the America East Championship at Albany on Mar. 16th, Vermont lost to the Greyhounds, 53-49, with Santo Carissimo of Sleepy Hollow and Iona Prep scoring seven points, three rebounds, and two assists in the finale. The Catamounts had a record of 21 and 11 during the season.

In the quarter final round against the University of New Hampshire at Albany on Mar. 9th, the Vermont team that includes Jordon Bronner, also from Sleepy Hollow, topped the Wildcats, 61-42. Carissimo had ten points, including three lay ups, one trey, and one for one from the foul line. He also had two rebounds, one assist, 3 steals, and one turnover, with his 31 minutes of floor action leading all players. Bronner had two lay ups for four points, one assist, and one turnover in the game.

And from Emily Novak at Muhlenberg College comes this Hackley news:

Junior Darnell Davis (East Harlem, N.Y./Hackley School) of the Muhlenberg College indoor track and field team had a strong showing at the Centennial Conference Championships.

Davis ran in the 4x200-meter relay that placed fourth in a time of 1:34.63, good for 10th place on Muhlenberg’s all time list. He is also a member of the relay team that ranks second in school history in the event with a time of 1:32.59.

Muhlenberg finished just five points behind Gettysburg to take sixth place in the team standings at the extremely competitive championship meet.
