Sports Digest: Mustangs Boast 11 Wins

See what your local student-athletes—and their biggest supporters—are up to.

Welcome to Patch's snapshot of sports in Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow.

From Michael Weitzen:

The AYSO under age 10 girls travel team defeated Pleasantville 2-0 on Saturday May 4th in Pleasantville. Pleasantville had soundly defeated the Tarrytown Mustangs in the fall 5-1, but was surprised by them 1-0 in the Somer’s Fall Classic tournament. Pleasantville has been the strongest team in the league for the past two years, at one point boasting a 17 game win streak. Both teams were ready for a great game but Tarrytown’s work in the winter paid off in the spring and now Pleasantville is the team looking for answers.

Scoring started quick when Catherine Grimes stole the ball from Pleasantville and crossed it to Maya Weitzen. Maya then earned an assist passing to Sam Nutig who decisively put the ball in the net. In the second quarter Talia Fante earned an assist as well crossing it to Maya Weitzen who gave the Pleasantville keeper no chance and the Mustangs a 2-0 lead. Emma Clarke with her footwork and precision passing, and Sophie Sylves-Berry with her speed and hustle, both contributed to many scoring opportunities. Julia Costa played a perfect first half at keeper and has not given up a goal the entire spring. In the second half she had multiple shots on goal that just missed including a thriller from 25 yards out off a corner kick from Maddy Navin that ricocheted off the cross bar and awed the crowd.

In the second half Pleasantville and their high-powered passing attack would not go away keeping the Mustangs on their toes. Sam Nutig played goalie for the first time this season, yet had the poise and command of a veteran keeper. Annie Dineen shut down any dribbler coming her way and consistently forced the ball out of danger. Sadie Swenson put in two quarter of strong defense despite playing with a stomach virus. Maddy Navin was spectacular as usual stopping multiple Pleasantville attacks and using her big kicks to set up offensive possessions. After the girls victory they celebrated by doing their own rendition of the “Harlem Shake.”

The girls next travel to Mt. Pleasant on May 11th to face a team that they have never beaten. Their last match with the Wildcats ended in a zero-zero tie and they lost twice the previous season. The Mustangs now have 11 wins, one loss, and two ties for the 2012-2013 season.
