SWAT Team Rescue at Tarrytown Lakes

The Skate Shack often suffers its share of police action as the area seems to be a popular spot for alleged student drug and alcohol infractions.

But recently, there have been several more dramatic scenes in the parking lot adjacent to the Tarrytown Lakes – one a fight between students with reportedly 50 onlookers, the other a standoff between a woman in her car threatening to harm herself and officers with a loaded gun.

Early evening on Feb. 13, police responded to a report of a large fight in progress at the Lakes and made several arrests. An article in LoHud.com categorized it as a small fight between students with a big audience. The scene was cleared in 15 minutes, LoHud reported.

Additional units were called to assist from Sleepy Hollow and Irvington, Tarrytown Police reported. Two EF students were held on $100 bail for charges of disorderly conduct and had to surrender their passports. 

Earlier in the week, at 8:45 a.m. on Feb. 11, Tarrytown police received a call from State Police that they had a distraught 28-year-old woman on the line stating she had a gun and wanted to kill herself.

The woman said she was in a black CRV near the Tarrytown Lakes. She allegedly told State Police that if any cops came near her she would harm herself.

Tarrytown police located her car at the Skate Shack lot. Officers stopped traffic on Neperan Road between Tower Hill and Marymount. State Police advised them to proceed with caution considering the threats the woman made.

Police called Tarrytown Volunteer Ambulance Corps and requested a negotiator from Greenburgh PD. Three negotiators arrived with the SWAT unit.

By 9:14 a.m., police reported the woman was in custody and being transported to Phelps Memorial Hospital by ambulance.

Police said they recovered a loaded handgun from her car.

The woman was charged with criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree and was arraigned in the hospital by Sleepy Hollow Judge Andres Valespino at 2:35 p.m., released into the care of the psychiatric staff with a return court date.
