Tarrytown Businesses Raise Funds for Local Farm

Two Tarrytown businesses are teaming up with Captain Lawrence Brewery Co. to support local farming and help raise funds to rebuild Hemlock Hill Farm's barn.

The barn was destroyed on April 25 in the fire that also claimed the lives of many chickens. Hemlock Hill Farm opened in Cortland Manor in 1939 and is one of the only family farms left in Westchester. The farm is currently engaged in a partnership with the State and County to protect the land, which is an important watershed in the area, from development.

Village Dog and The Tapp of Tarrytown along with Restaurant North of Armonk will join farm owners Laura and John DeMaria and Captain Lawrence Brewing Co. of Elmsford for a weeklong series of fundraising events starting on Father’s Day.

"We are fortunate to still have productive farms in Westchester," said Brew Master Scott Vaccaro, owner of Captain Lawrence Brewing. "Our hope is to raise enough money to rebuild the main barn and in the process to give back to a great local business.”

Captain Lawrence Brewing Co. has worked closely with Hemlock Hill Farm since the brewery opened in 2006. Vaccaro has worked with the DeMaria family to minimize waste by sending his spent grain from his brew cycles to the farm to be used as cow feed. A portion of the proceeds from the events, where the Tarrytown and Armonk restaurants will served meat and produce from Hemlock Hill, will benefit the farm.
