Vacant Spaces: What Should the Empty Lot on Beekman Be?

When a new Sleepy Hollow Merchants Council met for the first time, there was some talk of what would become of that empty lot (eyesore) in the middle of Beekman Avenue.

Fenced in between Fleetwood Pizza and the Tarrytown Gourmet is a sizable piece of land which was going to get developed until the developer dropped out.

Village Administrator Anthony Giaccio said at the Merchants meeting that someone was in the process of getting building permits but the deal fell through because the lot was too expensive. He did say the village was considering taking it over in a private/public partnership whereby a portion of the property would have to serve a public use like much needed upper level parking.

To this, resident Cynthia Aridas responded on Patch that she would love to see the Open Door health clinic move into a brand new building on the vacant lot. "Near their current location, right across from parking at Morse, easy walk from the inner village, and a bus stop on the corner," she wrote.

What do you think should live on this lot? And in general, what kind of business would you like to see open on Beekman? There are a number of spaces available now -- from the former 2nd Nature skate shop to the United Auto Workers Union Local 664 closest to the river. Weigh in below in this latest round of our ongoing Vacant Spaces debate.
