Winter Cheerleading Returns
In the proposed budget for the public schools of the Tarrytowns is renewed support for the winter cheerleading program, previously saved by its students.

Thanks to the students who worked so hard to preserve their sport and coach Melissa Alvarez who was willing to volunteer in the meantime, winter cheerleading will likely receive financial support again from the school system.
In his preliminary budget proposals, Superintendent Dr. Howard Smith itemized more additions than cuts, including the reinstatement of winter cheerleading.
"Go Hollow!" says coach Wendy Yancey, who took a year off with her sister Cindy to care for their kids at home. She said they are both very excited for the news. "We are looking forward to working with the girls and can't wait for the upcoming football and winter cheerleading season. It is a necessary program and it helps promote and continue school spirit in the schools as well as in the community."

The winter cheerleading had been cut but propped up by alternative means, namely the kids themselves “working hard and saving it themselves,” Smith said. Impressed with their efforts, the board decided the program deserved saving. “They worked hard and showed us it was important. It’s significant for these young women.”
