Here are the top stories today in Three Village:
- The Sound of Heavenly Music: It is a match made in heaven. The Setauket Presbyterian Church invites the Three Village community to hear music from the organ customized for the church. The congregation’s previous organ was installed in 1968, and over the years began to exhibit evidence or age. Leather parts and other mechanisms of the magnificent instruments can wear a tear over the years. Luckily, Setauket Presbyterian Church receives 10 percent of the 5 percent distribution of the of the 100 million dollar endowment that totals 100 million dollars from from the Gillespie Trust. Organs are a central part of church services. “Music is a mindful part of worship life,” proclaimed the interim pastor Kate jones Calonne. The organ boasts 1,200 pipes and is expected to reverberate through the church. According to congregation member Jean Hornbeck, the organ, just fills the whole church. On Oct.16, the public is welcome to attend dedication ceremonies at 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. This sonorous instrument is certain to enhance worship so church is eager to open its doors to the Three Village community. - Across New York State, the Department of Agriculture has alerted homeowners to the growing presence of the Spotted Lanternfly, a winged and invasive species of insect. It was first observed in New York in Staten Island, but has become increasingly more common and destructive to plants like farm crops and grapevines. Firewood, rusty metal, stone and other surfaces are some of the methods through which the pest has increased its population locally. While agriculture is not huge industry on Long Island, this bug indigenous to Asia can damage the ecosystem of plants here in Suffolk County and can also hurt the grapes that define the vineyards we have out East. The state asks that Long Islanders who spot these creatures carefully inspect property to monitor whether the Spotted Lanternfly has cropped up near your backyard. The state asks that surveyors are allowed access to lands if they are checking for the insect. Residents are always urged to request identification for anyone who represents themselves as a surveyor. Although the SLF can fly short distances and jump, thriving on surfaces is the primary way they are penetrating the insect population throughout New York state, so please be vigilant and contact Cornell University integrated pest program to find out appropriate pesticides and how to control the creepy crawlies. This increase is no laughing matter, so please use the web reporting tool, survey 123… if you are greeted by the Spotted Lanternfly on your lawn. (TBR News Media)
- Suffolk Burglaries: A spree of brazen robberies recently hit home. Many Three Village residents were aware of the broken window at Dunkin Donuts in East Setauket. Overnight, the window was broken in an attempt to burglarize the popular quick eatery. Reports of theft, burglary and robbery have jumped to over 12 instances across Suffolk County over the past few weeks. Most recent burglary was at Asian Fusion located in Holbrook this Sunday morning. Although towns including Medford, Bohemia and Smithtown have been hit, locally, Setauket, Lake Grove and East Setauket business are among those establishments who have been victimized by this pattern of breaking in and removing the cash register. Suffolk County police are investigating the crime for any connection in the string of incidents. In Three Village, residents can check security cameras and remain watchful of suspicious activity. While the police are patrolling business areas more, merchants and customers alike, should report any relevant information to the Suffolk County Tip line at 1800- 220- TIPS. (News 12)
