Here are the top three stories today in Three Village:

  1. Earlier this week, three residents and representatives from the Three Village Civic Associationspoke at the Town of Brookhaven's Planning Board public hearing and expressed concerns about a proposed subdivision for East Setauket. Developers plan to demolish a 1920s farmhouse at the southeast corner of Pond Path and Upper Sheep Pasture Road, known locally as the Selleck property, to build an eight-lot preliminary subdivision with a cul-de-sac and a drainage basin. The civic association has asked for the approximately 6-1/2-acre residential property to be protected, as they are concerned about a cluster treatment by the developer. The Planning Board has reportedly placed the item on its decision calendar. (TBR News Media)
  2. Setauket Assemblyman Steven Englebright has spoken out calling for reform after the recent slew of mass shootings that included the elementary school massacre in Uvalde, Texas. "We’re seeing an absolute epidemic and the loss and slaughter of innocence and it has to stop," said Englebright. "People are identifying with weapons." Englebright also highlighted New York Governor Kathy Hochul’s Jun. 6 signing of legislation strengthening New York's gun laws, which aims to "close critical loopholes exposed by shooters ... and protect New Yorkers from the scourge of gun violence." (TBR News Media)
  3. The Stony Brook Fire Department is hosting its Annual Drive-In Movie event on Aug. 6, and they are inviting the community to help them choose the film! In a recent Facebook post, the Department offered choices of "Raiders of the Lost Ark," "The Sandlot," "The Princess Bride," "The Dark Knight," "Jurassic World," and "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle." You can cast your vote by commenting with the title of the movie on the Facebook post. (Facebook)

Are you a Three Village resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?

Bloomberg recently asked experts where they’d invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.

Thinking you can’t afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.

Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here’s why:

  • Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
  • Contemporary art historically returns 23.2% when inflation is >3%
  • Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164% (1995-2021)
