DEC Clears Local Kids for Pheasant Hunting

Children ages 12 to 15 will be allowed to hunt for pheasant on Oct. 29 and 30.

Junior hunters ages 12 to 15 will be allowed to hunt for pheasant in a special two-day hunting season at area parks, the announced Thursday.

The event, which is scheduled for Oct. 29 and 30, is the DEC's inaugural pheasant hunt for junior hunters. It reflects a tradition in hunting in which the pheasant hunt is one of the first experiences young hunters often enjoy, according to the DEC.

"This special hunting season not only provides Long Island's junior hunters a brand new outdoor recreational opportunity, but it is also a chance for adult hunters and mentors to pass down their tradition, knowledge and experiences from one generation to the next, and help raise responsible local hunters," Peter Scully, regional director for the DEC, said in a statement.
