Heat Index Could Top 100 Degrees On Long Island

A heat advisory has been issued for the island.

LONG ISLAND, NY — A heat advisory will be in effect Thursday and Friday on Long Island with the heat index expected to flirt with 100 degrees.

The highest temperatures and heat indices are expected between 1 p.m and 5 p.m. each day, the National Weather Service says.

The heat advisory will be in effect from 11 a.m. Thursday until 8 p.m. Friday. Temperatures are expected to reach the 90s both days on the island, with Friday being the hotter of the two.

"Because of elevated dew points temperatures are only expected to fall into the upper 70s overnight [Thursday] leading into Friday," the NWS says. "This lack of overnight relief contributes to the heat expected in the afternoon Friday as widespread temperatures in the upper 90s are anticipated throughout the forecast area."

Seniors and those with chronic health problems or mental health conditions are at an increased risk. Homes without air conditioning can be much hotter than outdoor temperatures.
