Jazz Loft Offers Weekend Of Top Jazz Acts

April brings a full calendar of Jazz performances this month, as the Jazz Loft welcomes old friends and new. On Friday, April 21 at 7 p.m. the Jazz Loft presents The Harry Allen Quartet, a Jazz Loft favorite. Saxophonist Allen is best known for his work with jazz greats John Colianni, Dori Caymmi, Keith Ingham, John Pizzarelli, and Bucky Pizzarelli.

On Saturday, April 22 at 7 p.m. the Jazz Loft stage will welcome Elsa Nilsson and her Band of Pulses. Flutist Elsa Nilsson, will be joined by Pianist Santiago Leibson, Bassist Marty Kenney and drummer Rodrigo Recabarren.

Nilsson will be performing her original composition of “Pulses,” music based around the rhythmic and melodic materials of Dr. Maya Angelou's poem “On the Pulse Of Morning.” The suite explores the intersection between jazz and communication by highlighting the subtle melodic development and deep groove in Dr. Angelou’s reading of her poem.

Originally from Gothenburg, Sweden, flutist Elsa Nilsson is now based in New York City where she performs regularly at various established venues and teaches Rhythmic Analysis and Socially Engaged Artistry at The New School.
