Letter: Peaceful Resolutions Are Possible

Conscience Bay Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends reflects on 9/11.

Editor's Note: Joy Weaver and Carolyn Emerson are the co-Clerks of the Conscience Bay Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers).

As we reflect on this 10th anniversary of the calculated, criminal attacks on our country, our hearts are full and our prayers go out to all who are still suffering from the losses of that day and its complicated aftermath.

As Quakers, we believe that peaceful resolutions are possible even in deeply-rooted and frightening conflicts. We have an understanding that if we are to have peace in these times, we must all, no matter our situation or the horrors we have lived through, practice excruciating acts of forgiveness, and look always for the Light in the “other.”

On behalf of the members and attenders of the Conscience Bay Meeting, we invite you to join us in the most lasting and meaningful honor we can pay to all those who have selflessly sacrificed, at the towers, in Washington, DC, on Flight 93, in any modern battlefield: look within and, with Divine assistance, find ways to live in peace, every day.
