New York Blood Center To Host Blood Drive At Stony Brook University

STONY BROOK, NY — New York Blood Center will host a blood drive on Thursday at Stony Brook University to celebrate the university hitting the milestone of 33,000 blood donations — a total of 99,000 lives saved.

It will run from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. in Ballroom A of the Student Activities Center.

There is only 30 donations to go before the university reaches the milestone.

Stony Brook has been a longtime partner of the blood center for many years, hosting consistent blood drives since 2000 and encouraging students to donate blood and become lifetime donors, officials said in a news release.

There will be extra precautions to help prevent the person-to-person spread of COVID-19, officials said. People will not eligible to donate if they’re experiencing a cold, sore throat, respiratory infection, or flu-like symptoms. For information on donor eligibility and COVID-19 precautions visit here.

Officials noted that it only takes one hour to donate, but a single donation can save multiple lives. Roughly one in seven hospital admissions require blood transfusions. The people who need them most include cancer patients, accident, burn, or trauma victims, newborn babies and their mothers, transplant recipients, surgery patients, chronically transfused patients suffering from sickle cell disease or thalassemia, and many others.
