The victim reported meeting a man unknown to her at an off-campus party, University Police Chief Dawn Smallwood said Monday.

STONY BROOK, NY — The University Police Department is investigating a sexual assault that took place at Stony Brook University early Monday morning, Chief of Police Dawn Smallwood announced in a safety alert to students.

The announcement came as part of the department's "continuing effort to keep the campus community informed about matters of safety," she said.

The assault took place at around 3 a.m. inside a residence hall, and the complainant contacted police Monday afternoon, reporting that while attending a party off-campus she met an individual not previously known to her, whom she returned to campus with, according to Smallwood.
