Chris Monahan, 23, of Centereach, showed up one night a few months ago and has been back about 15 other times, he said. "It's awesome. Almost every Thursday it gets packed. It's a good time," he said.

Mike Moosmueller, 26, of East Setauket, said he's been coming down more than three years: "There's different generations of karaoke lovers who come. I like it because it's local and because of the DJ. It's like my own version of Cheers," he said.

The crowd: Dominated by – but definitely not limited to – Stony Brook University students. Karaoke fans flocked from near and far to crowd the stage area, while those less inclined to sing hung back on the couches in the back.

Say hello to: Chris Brownell, karaoke host and owner of Songbird Karaoke company, who's not your typical DJ. He interacts with the singer and the audience as songs are sung. "It's more of a party atmosphere than just a place where people sing songs," Brownell said.
