Stony Brook University Joins CAA, Leaves America East Conference
The move means all Stony Brook sports teams will play in the Colonial Athletic Association beginning next year.
STONY BROOK, NY—Stony Brook University sports teams will be competing in a new conference next year. The university announced it will join the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) where the Stony Brook Seawolves football team already plays.
For two decades, Stony Brook teams, except football, have competed in the America East Conference. Stony Brook President Maurie McInnis and Director of Athletics Shawn Heilbron announced last week that the university decided to accept an invitation to the CAA, where all 18 sports programs will move beginning fall 2022.
“I’m very excited to announce that Stony Brook University will join the Colonial Athletic Association,” McInnis said in a statement.

“This invitation is a historic step for our institution and a testament to our tremendous growth— both in academics and athletics—over the last two decades. Today would not be possible without the dedication of our student-athletes and coaches, who have paved the way for this moment."
Stony Brook and Hofstra University will now compete in the same conference, along with the College of Charleston, University of Delaware, Drexel University, Elon University, Northeastern University, Towson University, University of North Carolina Wilmington, and the College of William & Mary.
