Here are the top stories in Three Village today:

  1. Stony Brook Hospital: A mandate took effect Monday of this week directing hospitals to suspend or terminate health care workers who refuse the Covid– 19 vaccine. While 90% of Stony Brook university Hospital staff claim to have received at least one dose of the vaccine, Governor Cathy Hochul wants all health care providers vaccinated. About 85% of new York State employees have received the shot, the executive has demanded that medical staff have a higher standard or face employment consequences. Using homes and health systems prominent on Long island like Northwell have already moved to oust those personnel unwilling to comply. Summerly, at least on nurse at Stony Brook was refused a religious exemption that was previously afforded to her. In recent days, the state has authorized redistributing vaccinated staff to compensate for the thousands of providers who are expected to miss the deadline to receive the vaccine. This struggle to balance pandemic protections with personal freedoms is the latest struggle in more than a year of tug of war between government and individuals. (abc7)
  2. East Setauket: The DOT advised the communities of East Setauket and Port Jefferson that the resurfacing project would begin in late summer 2021. The effort to fill potholes and create smooth roads for derivers is expected to last until late fall and extends from Nichols road east ward. Drivers are growing weary of the delays and traffic headache that the construction project has brought. Heavy traffic and inefficient redirection is prompting locals to wish for a speedy end to the improvements. For example what was once a 15 minute jaunt can take upwards of 40 minutes because of a combination of detours, increased traffic volume and decreased rates of speed on the road. 25 A is one of the busiest areas through fare and there is community concern throughout Three Village, that the impending holiday season will only intensify the traffic woes. Do you think the resurfacing project will conclude on time? There are also some infrastructure improvements being made, and potholes due too any frigid weather are promised to receive priority while construction is ongoing. Will the expected smooth sailing make the headaches worth it, or should the state funds have been diverted to another local priority? (The Village of Port Jefferson)
  3. Update on Literacy Challenge :It was all in good fun, over the summer students in the Three Village School District took part in a challenge to read goo gobs of books. In total, over 16,000 books were read by elementary students across the district. Emma Clark Memorial Library officiated the challenge. The esteemed institution ultimately awarded the Emma Cup to Setauket elementary, the hotbed of kids literacy where the greatest number of books were read. Reading is a great way for young minds to learn about the world and to practice fundamental skills like spelling, writing and reading comprehension. Making it fun and a part of a regular routine is why students from this formidable district continue to shine. Kudos to the hard work put in this summer by the kiddos from Setauket elementary!
