A group of more than 20 nurses and respiratory therapists from SUNY Upstate Medical University received a hero's welcome when they arrived at Stony Brook University Hospital Thursday to help treat coronavirus patients.
The nurses will start work on Friday and will help with staffing of 300 additional hospital beds, including 180 additional ICU beds, that have been set up to treat coronavirus patients, Stony Brook officials said.

Stony Brook is treating more than 300 patients who have tested positive for the virus.
“We are so grateful for the assistance from our sister hospital in the State University of New York (SUNY) system,” said Michael Bernstein, interim president of Stony Brook University. “This generous and compassionate act demonstrates the true strength of our state system in responding to the call to help residents throughout New York State.”
