1 Dead, 7 Injured In Fire On UES, FDNY Says

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — One woman has died and seven people were injured after a fire broke out in an Upper East Side apartment building on Wednesday afternoon, New York City Fire Department officials told Patch.

According to the FDNY, the fire broke out on the top floor of a five-story apartment building located at 409 East 81st St. between First Avenue and York Avenue around 12:33 p.m. Wednesday.

The 74-year-old woman was rushed to NewYork–Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center in critical condition, where she succumbed to her injuries, the FDNY said.

Officials said the fire was put out around 1:22 p.m. Wednesday.

“Devastating news from our community this afternoon, where a fire at 409 E 81st St resulted in one fatality,” Councilmember Julie Menin tweeted. “I’m praying for that person’s family and the full recovery of three others who were injured.”
