2022 Greek Independence Day Parade To March Up 5th Ave On Sunday

After a two-year pandemic hiatus, the Greek Independence Day Parade will run up Fifth Avenue again on Sunday.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — As they have done nearly every year since 1938, revelers will march up Fifth Avenue on Sunday for the annual Greek Independence Day Parade

The parade, which marks Greece's 1821 declaration of independence from the Ottoman Empire, runs each year along Fifth Avenue between East 64th and 79th streets. It has gone on hiatus for the past two years due to the pandemic, however, with Sunday's event marking a grand return.

Sunday's parade will kick off at 1:30 p.m., according to an event page by the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York, which organizes the event. Detail about floats and other participants have not yet been released.

Past years' parades have typically included squadrons of evzones — members of the Greek presidential guard who march with a distinctive step while clad in scarlet caps — as well as local officials and members of the large Greek diaspora in New York City.

Sunday's festivities come later than usual — the parade is typically held in April, with Greek Independence Day formally falling on March 25.
