Cocktail Lounge Disguised As Shoe Shop Opens On UES: See Inside

An unassuming hardware storefront on 2nd Avenue conceals a secret: a high-end cocktail lounge. Take a peek inside newly-opened Keys & Heels.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — The locksmith and shoe repair storefront on Second Avenue looks as if it's been there for decades. Indeed, above the racks of keys and piles of boots in the window is a faded bit of signage: "Keys & Heels Locksmith Shoe Repair," it reads — "Since 1971."

In fact, Keys & Heels has occupied the storefront at 1488 Second Ave., between East 77th and 78th streets, for only a few weeks. And it is no shoe repair shop: the unassuming facade conceals a cozy cocktail lounge, one of the latest speakeasy-style bars to open in the city in recent years.

After a soft opening in March, Keys & Heels fully opened this week, accepting walk-ins and taking reservations online.

The bar was conceived by Massimo Lusardi, who took over the former Pookie and Sebastian clothing store space. Lusardi's company, In Tune Hospitality, also runs the Italian restaurants Uva and Uva Next Door on the same block.

Keys & Heels' interior is described as "whimsical yet sophisticated," furnished like a living room with velvet seats and soft lighting that create a "flirtatious and seductive atmosphere," according to a representative.

On the menu are a dozen citrus-focused cocktails, including the "Upper East Side" (whiskey, vermouth, bitters and smoked cherries) and the "Keys Spritz Bomb" (vodka, guava nectar, aperitivo and prosecco). The menu also includes wine, beer and bar snacks like mini tacos, homemade focaccia and panini.

Its deceptive presentation extends all the way to its social media presence: Keys & Heels' Instagram page gives no indication of its true use, with photos of a cobbler at work polishing boots.

Keys & Heels is now open from Thursday-Saturday, starting at 6 p.m. Table reservations are released online at noon Tuesdays for the following weekend.
