Columbus Day Parade To March Up 5th Avenue Monday: What To Know

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — Italian flags and backed-up traffic are both likely sights along Fifth Avenue Monday, as marchers gather for New York's 78th annual Columbus Day Parade.

The parade runs from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., as more than 100 marching groups will process up the avenue from 44th Street to 72nd Street.

If you can't make it in-person, the parade will air live on ABC from noon to 3 p.m., according to the official event website.

At the front of the procession will be this year's grand marshal: Tom Golisano, founder of the HR company Paychex, to be joined by Mayor Eric Adams, Gov. Kathy Hochul, and a slew of other dignitaries.

Street closures will be numerous. Besides the Fifth Avenue parade route itself, police have barricaded off:

• 43rd through 47th Streets between Madison and Sixth Avenue (formation)
• Fifth Avenue between 72nd and 79th streets; 72nd-74th Streets between Fifth and Madison Avenues; 75th-78th streets between Fifth and Park avenues
• Eight other Upper East Side streets for "miscellaneous" reasons

Meanwhile, trash and compost pickups will follow a regular schedule despite the city holiday, but recycling pickup will be postponed a week until Oct. 17, the Department of Sanitation said.

Alternate-side parking rules are suspended Monday and Tuesday.

Last year's Columbus Day Parade was the first to be held in-person during the COVID-19 pandemic, following a virtual event in 2020.
