Cyclist Fatally Struck By MTA Bus Near Central Park, Police Say

The 19-year-old cyclist was heading south down Fifth Avenue when she was hit by a bus near 59th Street.

CENTRAL PARK, NY — A teenage cyclist was struck and killed by an MTA bus driver Tuesday morning in Manhattan's Grand Army Plaza by Central Park, an NYPD spokesman said.

The cyclist was traveling south down Fifth Avenue when she was hit by the bus near the intersection of 59th Street just before 9 p.m., an NYPD spokesman said. Preliminary investigations revealed that the bus was also driving south down the avenue when it struck the cyclist.

Officers responding to the collision discovered the cyclist unconscious and suffering from a head wound, and medics pronounced her dead at the scene, police said. An NYPD spokesman did not identify the cyclist, but did say she was 19 years old.

The MTA driver stayed at the scene and was not immediately charged with a crime, police said. Detectives with the NYPD's highway unit are still investigating the collision.

Ninety-two people have been injured in traffic collisions in the intersection of Fifth Avenue and 59th Street since 2009, according to city Vision Zero data.
