Fire Breaks Out In New Upper East Side Luxury Building

A new luxury condo tower caught fire on the Upper East Side Friday morning, prompting a large emergency response.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — A fire broke out Friday morning in a newly-built luxury tower on the Upper East Side, prompting emergency vehicles to swarm the street below.

Flames broke out around 10 a.m. on a lower floor of 180 East 88th St. — a 50-story condominium tower completed last year between Third and Lexington avenues, witness Sachyn Mital told Patch.

A visible plume of smoke rose from the tower as firefighters worked to contain the blaze.

The building has faced its share of controversy: local officials filed an unsuccessful lawsuit against developers DDG Partners in 2018, alleging that the tower's plans did not adhere to city building rules.
