Glaser's Bake Shop To Close After 116 Years On Upper East Side

The neighborhood staple will close July 1, owners announced Friday.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — Iconic Upper East Side bakery Glaser's Bake Shop will close this summer after 116 years of business, its owners announced Friday. The old-school German bakery, located on East 87th street and First Avenue, will serve up its last cakes, danishes and legendary black and white cookies on July 1.

The family-owned business is closing after three generations due to the current generation's desire to retire, according to the announcement.

"After many years of daunting hours and hard work, the third generation of bakers have come to the difficult decision to hang up their bakers hat and move towards retirement. This decision is not an easy one and has been made after long thought and careful consideration," read a statement posted to the business' Facebook page.

"Yorkville has seen many a changes over the years but seeing Glasers close has to be one of the saddest changes to take place," Angela Salerno-Ferguson commented on Facebook.

Other commenters noted that they would have to stop by the store one last time to take in the smell of freshly baked goods. The owners of Glaser's thanked its loyal customers in its statement.

"We would like to thank our loyal customers for their patronage and of course thank you for having us as a part of your celebrations since 1902. We wish everyone lots of love, and happiness in the future to come. Thank you for making our family business possible for all these years. With love always, The Glasers," read the statement.
