H Mart Plans New UES Store: Report

The Korean-American grocer bought a property on 86th Street in Yorkville, with plans to soon open a new location there, says The Real Deal.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — A new player has entered the competitive Upper East Side specialty grocer market.

Korean-American favorite H Mart is coming to 223 East 86th St., according to a report from The Real Deal.

The grocery recently bought a retail condo at the 86th Street address, across the street from the much-larger Fairway and along a competitive retail corridor that also is home to Best Buy, Target, Staples and a Tal Bagels.

H Mart, which opened their first store in Woodside, Queens in 1982 and now has about 100 locations listed on their website, is known as a reliable source of Korean food goods. The grocer has recently been in the news after being the titular star of a popular memoir by Japanese Breakfast lead singer Michelle Zauner, "Crying in H Mart."

According to The Real Deal, H Mart will need at least six months to make capital improvements.

Hopefully the Upper East Side won't have to wait too long before they too can have a good cry in H Mart.
