UPPER EAST SIDE, NY – French bistro Jean Claude – or Jean Claude II, for longtime East Siders – has reopened at 1076 1st Avenue on the corner of 59th Street, owner Kamel Moumeni told Patch.

“We’ve been doing good since we opened, we’ve been packed every night, and people love it,” Moumeni said.

An Algerian native who grew up eating French food at home with his 12 siblings, Moumeni started as a waiter at the original Jean Claude, which opened downtown in 1991.

The Upper East Side restaurant, which had been located at 1343 2nd Avenue for many years – between 70th and 71st Street – was forced to move when a developer announced plans to demolish the building it inhabited. In it’s place, a 21-story mixed-used complex is reportedly being constructed.

The new location features a menu of French bistro classics, as well as rotating daily specials like calves liver, duck confit, and a daily fish.
