UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — Jean Kennedy Smith, a diplomat and the sister to President John F. Kennedy, died at 92 Wednesday in her Upper East Side home, according to reports.

Kennedy Smith's death was confirmed by her daughter to the New York Times. The former ambassador to Ireland during the Clinton administration was the last surviving member of the original generation of the Kennedy political dynasty that included John F. Kennedy, Attorney General and New York Sen. Robert F. Kennedy and longtime Massachusetts Sen. Ted Kennedy.

As an ambassador, Kennedy Smith played a role in 1998's Belfast Agreement that is regarded for bringing an end to decades of violence in Ireland known as "The Troubles." Kennedy Smith often broke diplomatic protocol by meeting with members of the Irish Republican Army — the paramilitary that coordinated attacks to drive the British army out of Northern Ireland.

Kennedy Smith published her memoir, "The Nine of Us," in 2016. The book reflected on her relationships with her eight siblings and her parents, the businessman and ambassador Joseph P. Kennedy Sr. and philanthropist Rose Kennedy.

"I tried to explain in 'The Nine of Us' how we grew up with politics. At meals we talked about what was in the newspaper. We talked politics non-stop! Campaigning for our brothers was a part of our lives," Kennedy Smith told Parade Magazine in a 2017 interview.
