UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — The Loyola School is planning to build a six-story facility on its Upper East Side site in a move to expand the private school, according to reports and materials submitted to the city's Landmarks Preservation Commission this week.

Architects hired by the Park Avenue Jesuit school presented plans for the new red-brick building during a Tuesday public hearing of the LPC. The new structure will feature and expansion of Loyola's library and new science labs, classrooms, lounge space and arts studios, according to architectural sketches shared with the LPC. Loyola tapped Ernest Harris Architects to head up the expansion.

The new structure will be built in a rear courtyard of Loyola's campus, which means most of the building won't be visible from the street. Only the top of the new red-brick building can be seen poking out above Loyola's existing parish house and annex buildings on Park Avenue and East 83rd Street, according to sketches submitted by architects.

NEW YORK YIMBY was first to report Loyola's expansion plans.

Loyola must seek the city's approval for the new project because its campus lies within the Park Avenue Historic District, which spans the Upper East Side's widest avenue from East 79th to 91st streets. The Upper East Side school made this year's list of the top private schools in New York City.
