Man Severely Injured, Leg Crushed In UES Box Truck Crash: Report

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — A man's leg was crushed in a collision with a box truck on the Upper East Side Tuesday morning, according to reports.

The man was struck moments after he exited a van parked near Second Avenue and East 66th Street about 10:30 a.m., according to the Upper East Site.

The victim's hands were covered in blood as he screamed from the pain, clutching his leg, the local news outlet reported.

The shaken box truck driver told an Upper East Site reporter he'd honked his horn when he saw the van's door opened, but that he was unable to stop in time.

First responders rushed the man, who is expected survive, to Weill Cornell Medical Center, according to the report.

In the last five years, that intersection has seen 15 injuries resulting from motor vehicle crashes, according to Department of Transportation data aggregated by Crash Mapper.

That's a 200 percent increase from 2009-2013, according to a DOT presentation on a proposed and since completed intersection redesign meant to improve pedestrian safety.

Police and Fire officials had no information to share regarding the incident.
