Manhattan Is Going Car-Free From FiDi To Inwood — See When

The annual Summer Streets program is back, and this year, more than 22 miles of streets will be pedestrian-only, with games, snacks and art.

NEW YORK CITY — For the first time since the invention of cars, New Yorkers will be able to travel the length of Manhattan, from the Brooklyn Bridge to Inwood, on a car-free route, as part of the We Outside Summer Streets program.

This year, more than 22 miles of streets will go car-free for the annual program on five consecutive Saturdays, from July 26 through August 23, rain or shine.

In Manhattan, on Aug. 2, Aug. 9, and Aug. 16, the mega-route will start at the Brooklyn Bridge and travel along Lafayette Street and Park Avenue up to 110th Street, continue west on 110th Street to Broadway, and head north to Dyckman Street in Inwood.

At Park Avenue and 40th Street, there will be a Grand Lawn pop-up with lawn games and snacks, thanks to Grand Central Terminal.

In Harlem, on Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard from 110th Street to 125th Street, expect programming and community engagement.

Along the route in Manhattan, pedestrians will also find an interactive sculpture called "Collective Bloom," which will invite participants to ride bicycles to spin a giant kinetic flower, created by Acrylicize.

There will be several "art stops" featuring larger-than-life NYC letters designed by two local illustrators, Yuke Li and Tou Yia Xiong, for the perfect photo op.

"From the Brooklyn Bridge to Inwood — and across all five boroughs — New Yorkers will have more space than ever to walk, bike, run, and connect with their neighbors in their communities at our Summer Streets events," Mayor Eric Adams said of the program. "We’re not just opening streets this summer, we’re opening opportunities for a more vibrant, inclusive, and active city on 22 miles of car-free streets."

To keep the fun car-free, Citi Bike will offer free day passes for all Citi Bike riders by using the promo code LYFTSUMMER25. The free passes are only for the classic bikes, not the e-bikes.

The streets will be car-free from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. each Saturday.

"Summer Streets is a perfect example of what happens when we create public spaces for everyone, not just those in cars," Congressman Jerry Nadler said.
