Man's Assault Spree On Upper East Side Leaves 3 Hospitalized: Police

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — A man who may have been high on crystal meth assaulted a string of innocent bystanders on the Upper East Side Monday, according to police.

The spree began just after 8 a.m. near the corner of East 96th Street and Second Avenue, where the 32-year-old suspect punched a 65-year-old man in the face, an NYPD spokesperson said.

The older man was knocked unconscious and taken to NewYork-Presbyterian / Weill Cornell Medical Center in serious condition.

Minutes later, the man walked a few blocks north into East Harlem, where he used a glass bottle to assault a 66-year-old woman and a 37-year-old man, police said. Both were taken in stable condition to Harlem Hospital and Metropolitan Hospital, respectively.

Finally, around 8:30 a.m., the man punched a 22-year-old man in the face on East 92nd Street, between First and York avenues, police said. He was taken into custody by police moments later, and the 22-year-old declined medical attention.

Police found a substance they believed to be crystal meth in the man's possession while he was being arrested, an NYPD spokesperson said. Charges are pending against him.
