New Bagel Shop With A 'Modern' Twist Opens On Upper East Side

Modern Bread & Bagel, a popular gluten-free and kosher bakery and cafe, has officially opened its doors to Upper East Siders.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — A new bagel shop with a "modern" twist has recently opened on the Upper East Side.

After its initial teaser two years ago, Modern Bread & Bagel has finally unveiled its first location on the Upper East Side, marking its third presence in the city and the fifth nationwide.

Modern Bread & Bagel owners took to social media to announce the grand opening on Thursday, inviting customers to visit their new shop located at 1427 Third Avenue, between 80th and 81st Streets.

Modern Bread & Bagel has garnered acclaim for its inventive gluten-free twists on traditional brunch staples and authentic New York-style bagels. Their website states, "Brunch is not just for the weekend. Guests can now enjoy mouth-watering, fast casual brunches, minus the gluten."

Chef and owner Orly Gottesman was inspired to develop a gluten-free baking product that "didn't compromise on taste because of her food-centric husband living with celiac disease."

The bakery's website highlights that, after extensive global living and travel experiences, the dishes featured on the Modern Bread & Bagel menu draw inspiration from Orly Gottesman and her husband's favorite cuisines from various corners of the world, including Sydney, Paris, Tel Aviv and New York.

Gottesman is also the owner of the Upper West Side restaurant, Thyme & Tonic. Additionally, she has developed a gluten-free wheat replacement powder called Blends by Orly, which she incorporates into her own baked creations.

Modern Bread & Bagel's first location opened its doors in 2019 on the Upper West Side. Since then, it has received praise from both the media and customers alike, earning the prestigious recognition as the third-best bagel spot in New York City in 2022, Patch previously reported.

Modern Bread & Bagel's all-day menu boasts an array of creative brunch options, such as chef-curated fresh bagel sandwiches, assorted avocado toasts, breakfast grilled cheese, artisan salads and hearty bowls. They also take pride in their in-house practices, from squeezing their own juice to blending their own teas and baking all bakery items fresh daily on-site.
