UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — An Italian restaurant, an indoor golf venue, and a new location for a popular pub are among the latest food and drink establishments coming to the Upper East Side.

The soon-to-open eateries were presented on Tuesday to a Community Board 8 committee as their owners sought the board's approval to obtain alcohol licenses. They are among the dozens of new restaurants that Patch has covered in recent months as the hospitality industry recovers from the pandemic.

Here's a rundown of the openings we learned about this week:

Italian restaurant (1645 Third Ave., at East 92nd Street):

  • This not-yet-named business will be a "full-service Italian restaurant" run by the owners of the Barking Dog, the longtime eatery located a couple of blocks north, according to representative Michael Kelly.
  • Replacing the former Corner Cafe & Bakery, it will feature 130 seats across 40 tables. It will be open from 10 a.m. to 1 a.m., 7 days a week.
  • The restaurant will participate in the Open Restaurants program with outdoor seating on Third Avenue, Kelly said.

Bakery/cafe (1649 Third Ave., near East 92nd Street):

  • Right next door to the Italian restaurant, the Barking Dog owners also plan to open a "dessert bakery/cafe" in the storefront formerly home to the restaurant Fetch, according to Kelly.
  • Serving as a "sister dessert place of the restaurant," it will seat 68 people across 20 tables, plus a six-seat bar, Kelly said. It, too, will participate in Open Restaurants by placing tables and chairs on the sidewalk.

New pub (1664 First Ave., near East 87th Street):

  • This pub will be operated by the owners of DTUT, a prominent bar on Second Avenue that is being forced to close down "due to an inability to extend the lease with the landlord," representative Ben Korngut told the community board. It was unclear whether the new bar will have the name.
  • Besides DTUT, owners Barry Spellman and J.J. McHugh also run Biddy's Pub on East 91st Street and previously owned other Upper East Side businesses that have since closed.
  • Replacing East End Grill, the pub will serve standard bar food in addition to drinks.

Five Iron Golf (1681 Third Ave., on East 95th Street)

  • One of the night's more eye-catching openings, this indoor golf venue will open up within The Kent, a newly built, 30-story condo tower by Extell. It will occupy the tower's basement floors.
  • Five Iron Golf already has three locations in New York City, plus others around the U.S. and in Singapore. Billing itself as an "indoor golf and entertainment experience," its signature technology allows people to tee off onto a virtually-generated golf course.
  • It faced the community board this week because the venue will include a restaurant and bar, serving drinks and "American casual food" like sliders and flatbreads, according to representatives.

Cascalate (1712 Second Ave., near East 89th Street):

  • This Mexican restaurant was first previewed at the community board in January, replacing fellow Mexican spot Selena Rosa. It returned to the board this week, however, due to a change of ownership caused by one partner's departure from the project.
  • Representatives revealed its name, Cascalate, and described it as a "Latin bistro" with a concentration on Mexican ingredients.

Also this week, the owners of four already-open restaurants spoke to the community board in hopes of obtaining new liquor licenses: Two Wheels (1382 Second Ave.), Mercato Rustico (1300 Madison Ave.), Suki Ichiro Sushi (1694 Second Ave.), and India Palace (401 East 62nd St.).
