UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — A man in the East River was rescued by police divers on Wednesday evening, according to officials.

At about 8:30 p.m., police received a report that a man was in the East River near East 74th Street, police said.

A local couple jogging along the river first heard the man's cries for help, according to Upper East Site, who first reported the dramatic rescue. The good Samaritans told the local news website that they tried to use a steel barricade to keep his head above the rough river currents.

The couple shared that the man said he suffers from mental illness and that he entered the water in a suicide attempt — an action they said he regretted after entering the water nearly 30 minutes earlier, reported the news site.

Harbor and aviation units rushed to the location, just next to where an abandoned ConEd building sits, and two police divers helped rescue the man, officials said.
