Upper East Side Cafe, Veritable, Abruptly Closes After 7 Years

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — A local eatery in Lenox Hill has suddenly closed its doors for good this week after years in the neighborhood.

Veritable, a self-described laid-back restaurant known for its variety of cafe specials and prepared food items, abruptly closed this week, company officials confirmed.

A sign posted on the front door of 1201 Second Ave. says that the closure comes with "great sadness" and is in part because of financial constraints.

"We are extremely humbled that so many embraced our restaurant, and that we were able to succeed for as long as we had. For a restaurant to survive in New York City for seven years during the pandemic and with scaffolding on top of us is an accomplishment of which we can all be proud of," the sign read.

Veritable staff reported that the restaurant had remained covered by scaffolding for five years until the city finally removed it this past January.

"We are so excited! You can finally find us again. Veritable is back on the map," the company announced on social media three months ago.

This November would have marked the restaurant's eighth anniversary.

"What began as a little neighborhood restaurant on Second Ave. grew into a place that welcomed thousands of guests and employed dozens of people over the years. You welcomed us into your families, and we will cherish these memories forever," the company said.

The restaurant's phone went unanswered on Friday and the spot's Instagram account, last posted on March 21.
