Renovation Begins At UES Nonprofit Neighborhood Center

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — A $2.1 million renovation for upgrades to an Upper East Side neighborhood center broke ground last week, city officials said.

The renovation will pay for improved senior center and youth center facilities at the Stanley M. Isaacs Neighborhood Center, city officials said. The senior center will receive an upgrade to its kitchen facilities and the youth center will receive upgrades for its restrooms.

The neighborhood center, located within the Holmes Towers public housing development on First Avenue and East 93rd Street, serves thousands of low-income families, out-of-school youth and senior citizens each year.

City Councilman Ben Kallos and the New York City Housing Authority teamed up to fund the project.

“The Stanley M. Isaacs Neighborhood Center is truly one of our community’s cornerstones,” said Council
Member Ben Kallos. I could not think of a better way to put this money to good use in a way that will
benefit the everyday lives of my constituents. I am looking forward to the work being completed and happy for those who will reap the benefits," Kallos said in a statement.

Most of the people served by the Stanley M. Isaacs Neighborhood Center are residents of the Holmes and Isaacs Towers public housing developments, city officials said. The center has served the Upper East Side community for more than 50 years.

The bulk of the renovation is expected to be complete by February 2019 and full use of the new senior and youth facilities is expected to begin by the end of July 2019.

"Feeding older adults and families in need, as well as providing safe and engaging places for children to
learn, grow and play have been central to the mission of the Isaacs Center, since its founding," Gregory J. Morris, executive director of the Stanley M. Isaacs Neighborhood Center, said in a statement. "Renovations
to our senior center kitchen and youth center facilities are a significant win for this community, and speak
to the City’s renewed focus on critical investments in public housing residents.
