Target To Open 'Small Format' Store On Upper East Side

The new store is expected to open in 2019 on East 69th Street and Third Avenue, Target announced.

UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — Retail giant Target announced plans Tuesday to open a new "small format" store on the Upper East Side.

The new Target will be located in a 22,600-square-foot space on the ground floor of The Fairfax, an apartment building on East 69th Street and Third Avenue, Target announced. The store is expected to employ between 50 and 100 people and open in 2019, according to a press release.

Target plans to open 130 "small format" stores nationwide by the end of 2019. These urban focused stores differ from larger Target department stores by offering a selection of items curated to meet the needs of its local area. Target plans to open stores in Staten Island and Astoria in addition to its new Upper East Side location, the company announced Tuesday.

"As we continue to expand our footprint with small-format stores throughout New York, we strive to provide a convenient, one-stop shopping experience customized for locals, commuters and visitors in each unique neighborhood," Mark Schindele, senior vice president of properties at Target, said in a statement. "All three of these new stores will offer the best of Target in that borough, yet curate the assortment to meet the needs and preferences of the nearby community."

Target secured a lease with with real estate company TF Cornerstone for the new Upper East Side location. The store will be the seventh Target to open in New York City, according to a company press release.

"We are thrilled to be partnering with Target to open its first-ever store on the Upper East Side at The Fairfax," Steve N. Gonzalez, director of retail leasing at TF Cornerstone, said in a statement. "With its wide assortment of products and quick shopping experience, the new Target will become a valuable resource for not only residents of The Fairfax, but the entire Upper East Side community."
