Three West Village Spots Named 'Essential' In NYC: Report
On a list of the 38 Essential Restaurants in New York City, three were listed in the West Village. Two of them are popular Indian spots.

WEST VILLAGE, NY — In a neighborhood filled with top dining destinations, a recently published list deemed only three West Village spots as "essential."
According to the ongoing list of 38, published by Eater NY, only one Italian spot and two Indian eateries — one of which is a popular Washington Square Park dosa cart — made the cut.
One of those spots, Italian classic Via Carota, comes from neighborhood restauranteurs Rita Sodi and Jody Williams, who also own Buvette, I Sodi (soon to move to a larger spot) and Bar Pisellino.

"Via Carota remains the crowd favorite for good reason," Eater NY writes, "with its simple Italian dishes dressed up to perfection."
Another eatery that made the list, Semma, comes from another powerhouse team of food stars. Its owners also run Dhamaka on the Lower East Side as well as Masalawala & Sons in Park Slope, which seems to keep winning accolades since its opening last fall. Eater NY points to Semma's signature, unique South Indian dishes, like a giant crab with limited orders every night, tasty snails and gunpowder dosa.

Speaking of dosa's, the list's final West Village pick is NY Dosas, an acclaimed food cart in Washington Square Park. Eater NY notes that chef Thiru Kumar's dosas are "particularly fluffy," and that it's "nearly impossible to go wrong on the tiny menu."
"The Pondicherry special, stuffed with spicy potatoes and fresh vegetables, is a surefire hit, but equally good are the pancake-style uttapams and empanada-like samosas," Eater NY reports.
